11/6 Devonport, New Zealand

November 6, 2014
Devonport, New Zealand

It was incredibly cold outside and inside this morning.  The rain would stop, only to start up again.  Now I can see why this country is so green.  It rains a lot.

The skies finally cleared and we headed out to the bus stop.  I created a location on Facebook for our bus station while we waited.  Puketea Street Bus Stop :). The bus from our house swap in Blockhouse Bay to the CBD in Britomart takes 35-45 minutes.  Everyone greets the bus driver when they get and on and thanks the driver when they get off.  It's very nice!

The Harbour is less than a block from the Britomart bus stop.  We took the 12:30 ferry to Devonport, a small island just across the Harbour.

A princess cruise ship is in port, docked behind The Cloud.  That may be where we will board our cruise on the 15th.  There are two cruise ship docking locations.

Looking back on Auckland CBD

Two happy travelers on a very cold, windy ferry.  Yup, we are the ones stylishly dressed with three layers of clothing :)

Watching the ferry return to Auckland from Davenport

Beautiful, but very cold, walk to the Navy Museum next to the pier in the distance.
I'll include it in a separate post.

We watched the moving of a sailboat at The Devonport Yacht Club.  We've seen a number of yacht clubs in Australia and New Zealand and they are different than ours.  Here they seem to be more of a working boat yard with a building for dining and meeting, as opposed to a high society social club.

The Devonport brochure says this marine village is one of the cities oldest suburbs.  The earliest Maori settlement of the area dates back to mid 14th century.  The suburb of Devonport was originally settled as Flagstaff in the 1840s by European merchants since it was an ideal location to see ships arriving in Auckland Harbour.

Beautiful Victorian and Eduardian as well as some more modern homes overlook the water.

We stopped in Devonport Chocolates.  The chocolate shoes were my favorite!  They reminded me of Rosie's in Wilton Manors.

Shops and cafés on Victoria Road

Jandals, a Kiwi term for flip flops :)
