11/10 Waihi and the Martha Mine, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

November 10, 2014
Waihi, Coromandel Peninsula

Everywhere we drive there are amazing places to stop.  We got out of the car to see the building below and it turned out that there was a huge mining hole behind it that you couldn't see at all from the street.

The vast open pit of Martha Mine is still churning out gold and silver bullion today.

The machines look like toys, but I know that they are huge.

We walked around, but we certainly didn't cover 4 kilometers.

I like all the towns we have been to, but this one had particularly nice street planning with beautiful trees and plants, banners and public artwork.

We had dinner at the Sterling Cafe, the two story building on the left and the owner was a wealth of information about the area.

The owner is behind the bar.  He told us about a huge flood and showed us a picture on the wall of his last tavern. He and his wife, both much younger, are standing in water mid thigh in the photo.  They certainly are perserverant people!

I had to have more green lipped mussels.  This time they were served in a red sauce.

Scrumptious!

There was some nice lighting in town.

The end of another excellent day :)
