I Made Ada, Artist - Tegallalang, Bali

Sunday, August 10, 2014

On our drive to a Tirta Empul Temple we saw a man carving and stopped.
Meeting him turned out to be the highlight of our day!

Made (pronounced ma - day) in front of his wood shop and museum, saying good bye after our visit.

Made is a world renowned woodcarver who specializes in the carving of statues of the
mythical Garuda bird.  The entry to his museum is filled with photos, including one  of him
    with President and Mrs. Reagan.

He explained to Russ and our driver, Wayan, that Plumeria tree wood is used for the carvings.

He had two huge pieces shrink wrapped to ship.  One was going to a museum in Italy.

Made starts with a huge piece of wood.  He cuts the basic form and instructs his assistants
In completing the design.  It takes 5 people approximately a year to complete a piece this size.

I was surprised and thrilled to see Jesus on the cross.
